The Howard Pim Library comprises of an Africana collection that was named after John Howard Pim (1863-1934). Mr Pim was a member of the governing council of the University of College of Fort Hare in the years 1933 and 1934 to which he bequeathed part of his personal library.

Item John Bennie's Bible(University of Fort Hare, 1821)John Bennie was born on the 26th of October 1796 in Glasgow and died on the 9th of February 1869. He was a Presbyterian Minister, Missionary and early Xhosa Linguist. Also, one of the finding fathers of Lovedale Mission Station established in Ngqika. The wars that carried during the year of 1835 claimed the life of Hintsa the paramount Chief of Gcaleka Xhosa who was shot while in British Custody.Item Ashton William's Notes(University of Fort Hare, 1843) University of Fort HareAshton Williams was born on the 13th of July 1817 in England and passed on the 29th of March 1897 in the Northern Cape, South Africa. He was admitted as a student at Lovedale college on the 8th of September1838. He was later ordained on the 23rd of June 1842. In 1857 to 1859 the first complete bible translated into isiXhosa was in Mount Coke and only appeared in 1864. The translation was done by John White Appleyard, William Shaw, William Boyce and others. John White Appleyard was born in England in 1814 and was the son of Reverend John Appleyard.Item The Kaffir Wars and British Settlers in South Africa(University of Fort Hare, 1865)The kaffir wars occurred between the years 1779 until 1879. Only 9 wars were counted during this period. This day the U.P. presbytery of Kaffaria met here after engaging in devotional exercises. The Rev. Tiyo Soga, moderator being absent, the Rev. J.J. Cunning took his place and opened the meeting with prayer. The roll was then called present, the Rev, Mepis Cunning, Charles Davidson, Selate and Sedi ministries and others. And yet it is out of the undesirable din and turmoil of such debate, that every advance in the history of freedom, whether of thought or religion has always emerged. But there are times when peace and quiet however desirable are not attainable; and when in comparison with speech, silence merits anything but the praise bestowed upon it by a celebrated philosopher still living. It is not always 'golden', for a wiser than Carlyle has said, there is a time to speak, as well as a time to keep silence.
