Kwa Ndebele comprises a total area of approximately 361,000 hectares, consisting of two large blocks. 176000 ha original and 1975 consolidation areas, on which communal farming is practised; and 185000 ha incorporated during 1985, which consists of individual farming units formerly owned by white farmers. These commercial farms were held in trust by the South Africa Development Trust (SADT), as was the standard procedure for agricultural land expropriated for the purpose of consolidating the ten national states in South Africa.
