Abstract
The Government of South Africa has been investing in the development of irrigation systems. serving small-scale farmers for a long time with the expectation that these would lead to •
increased agricultural productivity that would translate to improved earnings for these farmers and lead to poverty reduction. Unfortunately, this does not seem to have happened and there are concerns about the current and prospective implications for the country meeting the Millennium Development Goals, particularly in respect to halving the number of people living in poverty. The main aim of this study was to assess the impact of the adoption of new technology on the socio-economic wellbeing of irrigating farmers of Maphophoma village in Nongoma Local Municipality of KwaZulu Natal (KZN) Province. The study employed a survey methodology to collect socio-economic data from farming households.
