dc.description.abstract | The majority of the poor in South Africa are involved in subsistence Agriculture. An increase in productivity of the production of staple crops would be one direct way of increasing income of those households as well as increasing the per capita availability of staples. The increased availability of staples could also release resources that could be used· to purchase foodstuffs for a better balanced diet and therefore contribute to the improvement of the nutritional status of the household. The general problem of agricultural development may well be the most critical development issue in Transkei (Transkei Land Reform Research Group; 1995). | |
