    John Bennie was a linguist. So, after learning Dutch his wife's language, he went on and learnt IsiXhosa. In 1824 he announced to his Presbytery that he will compile a list of vocabulary and grammar of the Xhosa language. This dictionary was compiled by him according to his understanding of the Xhosa language . He was involved in translating and transcribing the old narratives of IsiXhosa.
