This document presents a summary and recommendations of the 1967 Pretoria Throughway Scheme (Deurpadskema 1967), developed through a joint initiative of the Pretoria City Council, the Transvaal Provincial Administration, and the Department of Transport. Building on the 1960 Pretoria Traffic Plan, the report evaluates proposed transportation routes and recommends the development of a north-south and east-west freeway system to address increasing traffic demands within the city. The report emphasizes the integration of freeway networks, street improvements, parking facilities, and public transport within a coordinated urban transportation framework. It further examines route selection, traffic interchanges, one-way street systems, urban design considerations, and the relationship between transportation infrastructure and economic, social, and spatial development. As a historical planning document, it provides valuable insight into transport engineering, urban planning strategies, and the envisioned modernization of Pretoria during the late 1960s.
