The object of this study was to estimate the maximum and mean current grazing and browsing of the veld in the Buffalo River Basin of Ciskei. The importance of such a study is reflected in the realization that overstocking is one of the most significant problems limiting veld rehabilitation and the development of an economically viable livestock industry in Ciskei (Brown, Bishop, and Wilke, 1978; Trollope and Coetzee, 1978). The current grazing and browsing capacities were defined as the grazing and browsing capacities, respectively, of the vegetation in its current state.
