Abstract

This study is about the Challenges Facing (FET) Further Education Training Learners in the study of IsiXhosa at (Grade 8 – Grade 12) Level. Chapter One, deals with the research problem, the objective of the research, literature review, research methods and the application of findings. The objective of this study is to: (a) To investigate why Xhosa students have negative attitudes towards their mother tongue; with the specific reference to Further Education Training learners (Grade 8-Grade 12) in the Port Elizabeth District. (b) To discuss factors that could be taken into consideration to promote the development of indigenous languages. (c) To discuss and offer recommendations on advocacy as one of the strategies to promote languages. Chapter Two focuses on theoretical approaches to the study. Chapter Three focuses on the administrative challenges facing FET educators in teaching isiXhosa to Grade 8 – Grade 12 learners studying isiXhosa in the Port Elizabeth area.
