Abstract
In South Africa, particularly in Soweto secondary schools environmental education has never enjoyed the Same Status as other established subjects such as Geography, Biology and History. This has resulted in learners losing interest in environmental education.
There is a lack of environmental education at secondary schools that results in a lack of environmental awareness amongst learners.
This study seeks to recommend the integration of environmental education within the policies of the Gauteng Department of Education thereby contributing towards the establishment of environmental education as an independent subject in secondary schools.
