There have been revivals in the church from the very beginning of the world. There is a sense in which the progress of the church may be said to be by a series of revivals. It must be so, for human energy flags in every pursuit. Daily toil is an apparent exception, but men are impelled to it by the dread of poverty and hunger and thirst as to prevent men from falling into a state of remissness, so that times of reviving are in a sense necessary.
