dc.description.abstractThe right to human dignity is enshrined in Section 10 of the Constitution of South Africa Act 108 of 1996, but, educators' rights, particularly the right to dignity, have seldom been mentioned in the literature compared to the attention given to learners' and parents' rights. Most people, including educators, often lack understanding of, and fail to exercise their rights legitimately because of ignorance. This study examined how the professional educator's right to dignity is, and should be, interpreted and applied using a theoretical and legal analysis, and a field study involving structured interviews with 19 educators from 5 schools. A relatively recent, but prominent aspect of human Rights discourse, dignity features in Jewish, Christian and Muslim thought and overlaps with African notions of ubuntu and Africanisation. The study clarifies how religions and culture support and sometimes threaten educators' obligations and right to dignity.
