The conflict began with North-South war that started on 18 August 1955. The Torit mutiny, which broke out before the independence from the Great Britain on 1 January 1956, marked the beginning of the first civil war in the country ( 1955-1972), which continued for 17 years, after which the southern region achieved autonomy in February 1972 through the Addis Ababa Agreement.
