    An assessment of the parole system in East London management area: Eastern Cape Province.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate an assessment of the parole system in the East London Management Area of the Eastern Cape Province. The literature review reflects on the assessment and implementation of parole system in the correctional centres. To attain the aims and objectives of the study the researcher used the case study design as well as the qualitative research method. Data was collected from various legislative frameworks and analysed using content analytical method. Themes were drawn from the analysis. Some of the findings that emerged are: offenders are considered for parole should they meet all of the requirements of serving the non-parole periods and have been rehabilitated, the CSPB is empowered to make a recommendation to the court for dangerous criminals and prisoners serving life a sentence to be placed on parole. Some of the problems encountered by the Department of correctional services are: chairman of the parole board sometimes dominates the proceedings, parole violations, the malfunctioning of the parole system, lack of proper rehabilitation and vocational programmes, lack of proper implementation of parole legislation, overcrowding in the centers, offenders committing crimes, after they have been placed on parole, alcoholic behavior and influences from friends.
