Item Antimicrobial properties of alternative medicines used in the management of infections in diabetic patients: A comprehensive review(Elsevier, 2024-04-22) Aladejana, Elizabeth Bosede; Adelabu, Olusesan Adeyemi; Aladejana, Adebowale Emmanuel; Ndlovu, Sizwe InnocentIntroduction: Diabetes mellitus poses major health risks due to increased vulnerability to infections stemming from weakened immune systems and physiological complications. With antimicrobial resistance worsening prognosis, diabetic infections affecting multiple body systems present critical treatment challenges. This review examines the antimicrobial properties of alternative medicines used in the management of diabetic infections and addresses the apparent research gap in this area. Method: A comprehensive literature search was conducted on databases (PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar) using specified keywords. Exclusion criteria removed non-relevant articles, resulting in the selection of articles published between 2012 and 2023, focusing on medicinal plants, polyherbal formulations, and antimicrobial effects against pathogens associated with diabetic infections. Results: The study revealed a significant research gap regarding the use of alternative medicines for diabetic infection treatment, as only 14 articles published between 2012 and 2023 were relevant to this review. Selected articles primarily addressed wound infections (39 %), diabetic foot ulcers (28 %), foot infections (17 %), urinary tract 11 %), and skin infections (5 %). Commonly used medicinal plants include Curcuma longa, Azadirachta indica, Zingiber officinale, and Glycyrrhiza glabra among others. The alternative medicines demonstrated significant antimicrobial potential against common microorganisms associated with diabetic infections, especially Gram-positive bacteria. Discussion: This review shows the potential of alternative medicines in the management of diabetic infections. This efficacy was attributed to diverse secondary metabolites present in medicinal plants, offering promising prospects for novel antimicrobial agents. Given the susceptibility of diabetic patients to microbial infections, further investigation into the efficacy of medicinal plants for the treatment of infections in diabetic patients is essential. Further research is also imperative to validate and standardize these therapies and conduct clinical trials to evaluate their safety and efficacy in diabetic infection management.Item Effects of wood ash on physicochemical and morphological characteristics of sludge-derived hydrochar pellets relevant to soil and energy applications(Elsevier, 2022-07-22) Mohammadi, Ali; Anukam, Anthony Ike; Granström, Karin; Eskandari, Samieh; Zywalewska, Martyna; Sandberg, Maria; Aladejana, Elizabeth BosedeHydrochar is produced through a process called hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and constitutes a carbon-rich solid material with different remarkable applications. This study investigated the effects of wood ash on the physicochemical and morphological properties of biosludge-derived hydrochar in pelleted form relevant to the use of the pellets as a soil nutritional and liming agent and as a biofuel source. The hydrochar was mechanically compressed into uniformly-sized pellets under applied pressures of 4 and 8 kN after blending with varying percentages of wood ash in the order 0, 20 and 50%. The pure and blended pellets were characterized to determine the impact of wood ash on key properties, correlated to the two applications mentioned above. Results demonstrated a strong relationship between key features of the pellets and ash proportion. The wood ashblended hydrochar pellets showed good hydrophobicity as a consequence of increased contents of alkali and alkaline earth metals, but were low in aromatic functional groups compared to the pure hydrochar pellet. Furthermore, the heating value of the pure hydrochar pellet was about 4% higher than that of its parent material and indicates that this pellet has the capacity to serve as a source of energy. The study generally reveals that blending hydrochar produced from biosludge under HTC conditions with up to 20%–50% of wood ash and mechanically compressing into homogeneous pellets has promising potential for a nutrient-rich material that can enhance soil fertility.Item Hepatoprotective activities of polyherbal formulations: A systematic review(AOSIS Publishing, 2023-10-24) Aladejana, Elizabeth Bosede; Aladejana, Adebowale EmmanuelBackground: Liver diseases pose a substantial global public health challenge, encompassing conditions such as liver failure, hepatitis, cirrhosis and associated complications Safeguarding the liver becomes important as these conditions impact human health. Hepatoprotective agents play a pivotal role in mitigating liver damage caused by chemicals, drugs and toxins. Polyherbal formulations, combining botanical components from traditional medicine, offer a promising approach to addressing liver disorders. Their popularity arises from a multi-targeted strategy in treating complex diseases, marking a shift in focus toward these formulations. Aim: The study aimed to conduct a thorough review of the existing literature on the hepatoprotective activity of polyherbal formulations and provide a comprehensive overview of their mechanisms of action. This review provides the overview of the use of polyherbal formulations in the management of liver disease. Method: A systematic search of electronic databases, including : Scopus, Academia, Elsevier, Science Direct, Wiley, BioMed Central, PubMed, and Google Scholar, was conducted using a combination of keywords such as ‘polyherbal formulations’, ‘hepatoprotective’ and ‘liver diseases’. Studies published between January 2010 and April 2023 were included in the review. Results: A total of 61 articles were reviewed, and the studies showed that polyherbal formulations possess significant hepatoprotective activity against various hepatotoxic agents. The mechanisms of action of these formulations include antioxidant, antiinflammatory, antifibrotic and antiapoptotic effects. Additionally, some polyherbal formulations were found to stimulate liver regeneration, enhance bile secretion and promote detoxification processes. Conclusion: Polyherbal formulations have shown promising hepatoprotective activity, and their multitargeted approach to treating complex diseases makes them a potential alternative to conventional medicines. However, identifying the active compounds responsible for the hepatoprotective effects of these formulations and their pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics could provide insights into the development of new and effective drugs for liver disorders.
