The outcomes of the study encompassed issues pertaining of psychological, economic and social challenges. The qualitative method was adopted for the study to provide a deep understanding of the phenomenon under study. The data collection instruments used were in-depth interviews and focus groups. The following theories were adopted to guide the study: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, the Bidimensional Acculturation Model and the Empowerment Theory. The sample in this study was made up of 21 participants 16 were the discharged children from the institution while 5 participants were the focus group consisting of professionals from the Department of Child Welfare and Protection Services, Department of Social Services and Hupenyu Hutsva Children's Home.
