This work begins by outlining and analysing how black rugby originated and developed in East London; and later Mdantsane, through the twentieth century and analyses this long history of black rugby in South Africa, in the East London and Border areas of the Eastern Cape. To a certain degree, this work seeks to "set the South African rugby record straight', using oral evidence and content analyses of available documents that include early vernacular newspapers, and academic and nonacademic articles on the subject. Also, a loosely structured questionnaire was used to collect data.
