It involved 75 learners from one urban school and another 75 learners from one township school. The participants in this study completed the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) which consisted of 3 0 questions. This was the main instrument that was specifically modified and used to collect data. The Strategy Inventory for Language Learning was divided into six categories: cognitive strategies, memory strategies, metacognitive strategies, compensation strategies, social strategies and affective strategies. The findings indicated that all the learners who were participants in both schools reported high use of language learning strategies, township learners reported higher use of language learning strategies than urban school learners; the results also indicated that female learners used more learning strategies than their male counterparts.
